LIFE STORIES

My ex-husband mocked my weight in front of everyone and said no man would ever want me again. At our son’s pool party, I decided to hire an actor and teach him a lesson he would never forget 💔💔

Mark and I had been together for twenty years.

We met in college. He proposed to me two weeks after our graduation ceremony, in the empty university courtyard, beneath the pouring rain.

Back then, I believed our love would last forever.

During our marriage, we had four children—Noah, Emily, Jake, and our youngest daughter, Sophie. When Sophie was only six months old, my entire world fell apart in a matter of seconds.

That evening, I was walking around the living room with the baby in my arms, trying to put her to sleep. Mark had left his phone on the table. Suddenly, a message appeared on the screen.

“I can’t wait any longer. When are you finally going to tell her that you chose me?”

The name beneath the message was Lauren.

Lauren was Mark’s secretary. She was tall, slim, and well-groomed, with perfect hair and expensive clothes. She was about ten years younger than me.

When Mark came home, I could no longer remain silent.

“How long has this been going on?” I asked.

He did not even try to lie.

He sat down on the couch, clasped his hands together, and said in a tired voice:

“More than a year.”

I looked down at the sleeping baby in my arms.

One year.

That meant he had been cheating on me while I was pregnant. While morning sickness made it almost impossible for me to get out of bed. While the doctors told me to rest, but I continued taking care of our other three children.

“Why?” I barely managed to ask.

Mark remained silent for a moment, then said the words that continued echoing inside my head for a very long time.

“I don’t find you attractive anymore. I don’t want to waste the rest of my life beside a woman who has completely let herself go.”

I looked down at my loose shirt, my exhausted face, and the body that had not yet recovered from childbirth.

Mark packed his clothes and went to Lauren’s apartment that same night.

The following months became the most difficult period of my life. The divorce, the legal documents, the arguments over the children, and the sleepless nights nearly destroyed me. Sometimes I cried in the bathroom so the children would not hear me.

The most painful part was that Mark seemed to have started a new life without any regret. He went to restaurants with Lauren, posted pictures with her, and told everyone that he was finally happy.

Meanwhile, our oldest son, Noah, was preparing to turn fifteen.

“Mom, can we have a big pool party?” he asked me. “I want everyone to come. Dad too.”

I did not want my son’s birthday to turn into a family war, so I agreed.

One week before the party, Mark sent me a message.

“I’m bringing Lauren too. She’s part of my family now. I hope you can behave like an adult.”

That sentence burned me so deeply that I decided to put him in his place once and for all—and make sure he never forgot it.

Lauren was part of his family now, but what about me? I was the woman who had spent twenty years beside him, given birth to his four children, and built her entire life around him.

That same evening, I found the number of an acting agency.

When I called the agency and explained that I needed a man to pretend to be my boyfriend, there was a long silence on the other end of the line.

“Is this for a commercial?” the woman finally asked.

“No. It’s for a family party.”

Even I understood how ridiculous my request sounded. But at that moment, I was willing to do almost anything to prevent my ex-husband from seeing how deeply he had broken me.

The following day, a man named Ryan arrived at my house.

He was around forty years old, tall, broad-shouldered, and had a calm expression. When I opened the door and saw him, I briefly forgot what I was supposed to say.

“Emma?” he asked with a smile. “I’m Ryan. The agency sent me.”

I invited him inside and quickly began explaining the conditions.

“You simply have to stand beside me, hold my hand occasionally, and pretend that we’re happy together. Nothing more. The party will end at eight in the evening.”

“Why do you want to do this?” he asked.

I tried to hide my embarrassment.

“My ex-husband is coming with his new girlfriend.”

Ryan studied my face for a moment.

“And you want him to believe that you’ve moved on too.”

“Yes.”

“But do you believe it?”

The question caught me off guard.

“I’m paying you to play a role, not to analyze me.”

He smiled apologetically.

“You’re right. I was just trying to understand my character.”

On the day of the party, Ryan arrived wearing a blue shirt and a simple pair of light-colored pants. He behaved so naturally that no one would ever have guessed we had only just met.

He helped Noah hang the balloons, moved tables with Jake, and when little Sophie began crying, he took her from my arms without the slightest hesitation.

“You’re good with children,” I said.

“My sister has three children. I’ve been her unpaid babysitter for years.”

For the first time in months, I laughed sincerely.

When the guests began arriving, Ryan played his role perfectly. He occasionally placed his hand against my back, brought me water, and listened to me as though there were no one else around us.

Everything felt so natural that I sometimes forgot he was a hired actor.

Then Mark and Lauren appeared at the gate.

Lauren was wearing a short white dress and high-heeled shoes that were completely inappropriate for a pool party. Mark kept one hand against her back, as though he wanted to make sure everyone noticed them together.

As they approached us, Ryan gently squeezed my hand.

“Breathe,” he whispered.

“Emma,” Mark said with a forced smile. “It looks like you have someone to introduce us to.”

“This is Ryan.”

Ryan extended his hand.

“It’s nice to meet you.”

Mark looked at him and then at me. At first, surprise appeared on his face, but a few seconds later, he burst out laughing.

He laughed so loudly that all the guests standing nearby fell silent.

“Are you serious?” he asked me. “Do you honestly believe anyone will think a man like him is with you?”

I felt my face begin to burn.

“Mark, today is your son’s birthday.”

But he had no intention of stopping.

“Have you looked at yourself in the mirror? He looks at least ten years younger than you. How much are you paying him?”

The whole world seemed to freeze.

He had guessed the truth.

I wanted to disappear. I could not even feel Ryan’s fingers wrapped around my hand anymore.

But Ryan did not become angry. He simply smiled.

“Actually,” he said calmly, “I have a small gift for Mark.”

He walked over to the table and picked up a small box wrapped with a silver ribbon.

I had never seen it before.

“What is that?” I whispered.

Instead of answering me, Ryan handed the box to Mark.

“It’s for the birthday boy’s father. I think you should open it in front of everyone.”

Mark gave him a mocking smile.

“So, besides being an actor, you’re also a magician?”

He tore off the ribbon and lifted the lid.

Inside the box was a thick white envelope and a small memory card.

Mark opened the envelope.

The smile immediately disappeared from his face.

Inside were bank documents bearing our children’s names—statements for the college funds we had spent years building. I had kept them inside a locked drawer in my bedroom.

“Where did you get these?” Mark shouted.

Ryan pointed toward Lauren’s handbag.

“I didn’t take them from anywhere. Your girlfriend did.”

Everyone turned toward Lauren.

Her face became pale.

Ryan pulled out his phone and played a video. The screen clearly showed Lauren entering my bedroom during the party, opening the drawer, and placing the documents inside her handbag.

“I went into the house to get Sophie’s bottle,” Ryan explained. “I saw Lauren leaving your bedroom. When I asked what she was doing, she said she was looking for the bathroom. But the bathroom was on the other side of the hallway.”

He had kept his camera recording and followed Lauren. Later, when she left her handbag on a chair and walked toward the pool, Ryan found the envelope inside.

“You were stealing my children’s money?” Mark shouted so loudly that people across the street turned toward us.

“I wasn’t stealing it,” Lauren stammered. “You told me half of that money belonged to you.”

I looked at Mark.

His face became even paler.

“You told her about the children’s accounts?”

Mark did not answer.

Lauren turned furiously toward him.

“You promised that after the divorce, we would use that money to buy a house. You said Emma wouldn’t even notice it was gone.”

Angry whispers spread among the party guests.

Mark began shouting at Lauren. In response, Lauren announced that she had never loved him and had only believed his promises. A few minutes later, she removed her high-heeled shoes, ran toward her car, and drove away.

Mark remained standing beside the pool beneath everyone’s judgmental stares.

Ryan calmly approached him.

“A few minutes ago, you asked why a man like me would ever want to be with Emma.”

Mark stared at him without saying a word.

“The answer is simple,” Ryan continued. “Because her beauty is not something a mirror can show. She held a home together for four children while you secretly planned to steal the money meant for their future. You didn’t lose her because of her appearance. You lost her because you were never worthy of her.”

Mark tried to say something, but Ryan had already turned away.

That evening, after the final guests had left, I sat beside the pool and began to cry.

“I’m sorry,” I said to Ryan. “You were only supposed to be an actor, but you were dragged into all of this.”

He sat down beside me.

“According to my contract, my job ended at eight.”

I looked at my watch. It was already past eleven.

“Then why are you still here?”

Ryan looked toward the children, who were watching us through the window.

“Because I stopped working three hours ago.”

The following week, he called to ask whether the documents were in a safe place. Then he invited me to have coffee with him.

This time, there was no contract.

We did not rush anything.

At first, we simply talked. Later, he began coming to the children’s games. Sophie learned to fall asleep on his shoulder, and one day Noah told me that Ryan never tried to take his father’s place, but he was always there whenever Noah needed him.

Six months later, Ryan took me to the same acting agency building where everything had begun.

“The day you hired me, you asked me to play the role of a man who was in love with you,” he said. “I thought it would be the strangest job I had ever accepted.”

“Wasn’t it?”

He smiled and took my hand.

“Not the strangest. The most important. Because at some point, I realized I wasn’t acting anymore.”

I looked at him for a long moment.

For the first time in twenty years, I did not wonder whether I was attractive enough for a man.

The way Ryan looked at me answered that question without words.

Our story had begun as a performance.

But when he kissed me, we both knew that from that moment on, nothing between us was fake.
