LIFE STORIES

I had always treated people badly and humiliated everyone… but one day, I fell in love with someone I was forbidden to love, someone the whole world seemed to be against. 😱💔

I came from a wealthy family. Everyone at school knew who I was. Whenever I walked into the classroom, the voices immediately grew quiet. I had friends who were always by my side, and I had a girlfriend named Vanessa.

She was beautiful, but there was a coldness in her beauty. Vanessa loved laughing at people who seemed weak. And the class laughed with her, because no one wanted to go against her.

There was also a girl in our class named Emily.

She had Down syndrome. She always sat in the last row, near the window. She did not speak much, but she always smiled. Even at the people who had laughed at her just moments before.

At first, everyone thought I ignored her too. But in reality, I noticed everything.

I noticed how she sat alone in the cafeteria. How she left the classroom only after everyone else had gone. How she lowered her head whenever someone mocked the way she spoke or moved.

I did not approach her, but I always made sure no one hurt her too much.

I thought that was enough.

Until one day, I realized that protecting someone in silence can sometimes be almost the same as doing nothing at all.

During break, Vanessa had taken Emily’s notebook and was reading what she had written out loud.

“One day, I want to dance at prom… and feel beautiful at least once,” she read in a mocking voice.

The whole class burst into laughter.

Emily sat in her seat with her head lowered. Her fingers were trembling, but she said nothing. She only whispered softly:

“Please… give me my notebook back…”

At that moment, I walked in.

Vanessa smiled, thinking I would laugh too. But I walked up to her, took the notebook from her hands, and placed it back on Emily’s desk.

“Stop it,” I said.

The classroom fell silent.

Vanessa stared at me in shock.

“Are you seriously defending her now?”

I looked at Emily. Her eyes were full of tears.

“Yes,” I answered. “Because she is the only one here who has never hurt anyone.”

From that day on, everything changed.

I started sitting beside Emily in the cafeteria. At first, she was afraid to talk to me. She thought it was just another joke.

“You’re probably sitting at the wrong table,” she said one day.

I smiled.

“No. This is exactly where I wanted to sit.”

She looked at me for a long moment, then smiled softly. That smile was so sincere that, for the first time, I realized how fake all the shine around me really was.

We started talking. She told me about her favorite songs, her drawings, and her dreams. One day, she showed me one of her drawings. In it, there was a girl in a blue dress, standing in the center of a dance floor.

“Is that you?” I asked.

She lowered her eyes shyly.

“Maybe it’s the version of me I wish I could be… someone no one laughs at.”

Those words stayed with me.

I began looking forward to every day, just so I could see her. When she laughed, the whole school seemed to go silent for me. When she was absent from class, the day felt empty.

That was when I realized I was no longer just protecting her.

I was falling in love with her.

Not because she was like everyone else. But because she was unlike anyone else. There was a purity in her that I had never seen in the people around me.

But my world was not ready to stay silent.

One evening, my father called me into his office. My mother was there too. On the desk lay a photo of Emily and me in the schoolyard.

My father said in a cold voice:

“People at school are talking about you and that girl.”

“Her name is Emily,” I replied.

My mother sighed.

“You come from a good family. You need a girl on your level.”

Those words hurt me more than the mockery in the classroom.

“My level?” I repeated. “And what makes her lower than you?”

My father’s face hardened.

“She is different. And starting tomorrow, you will stop talking to her.”
[10.06.2026 22:11] 𝓠: I looked at them, and for the first time, I understood that my whole life they had taught me to choose people by their name, their money, and their appearance.

But Emily had taught me to see the heart.

“I’m not walking away from her,” I said.

My mother whispered:

“You will regret this.”

“If I leave her just because you are ashamed, that is what I will regret for the rest of my life.”

The next day, Emily understood everything from my face.

“They told you to stay away from me, didn’t they?” she asked.

I stayed silent.

She tried to smile, but her eyes filled with tears.

“You can go. I’m used to it.”

At that moment, I took her hand in front of everyone.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

Her voice trembled as she asked:

“What if everyone laughs?”

“Let them laugh.”

“What if your parents get angry?”

“Let them get angry.”

“What if you lose everything?”

I looked into her eyes.

“If I lose you, that will be losing everything.”

On prom night, everyone expected me to ask Vanessa to dance. She had arrived in a stunning dress and stood there as if she had already won.

But I did not walk toward her.

I walked toward Emily, who was standing near the door.

She was wearing a blue dress. Simple, delicate, but in my eyes, she was the most beautiful girl in the entire room.

She whispered:

“Everyone is looking at us.”

“Let them look,” I said.

I held out my hand.

“Will you dance with me?”

Tears ran down her cheeks.

“I’m not good at dancing…”

“I didn’t come here tonight to dance well,” I said. “I came here to choose you.”

Slowly, she placed her hand in mine.

When we stepped onto the dance floor, the room fell completely silent. Vanessa stood frozen. My father watched coldly. My mother could not even lift her eyes.

Emily was trembling, but I held her tightly.

“Am I embarrassing you?” she whispered.

I smiled.

“For the first time in my life, I am proud that everyone is looking at me.”

A few seconds later, someone began to clap.

Then another person.

Then the entire room filled with applause.

Emily looked around, unable to believe that the applause was for her. She rested her head on my shoulder and cried.

That night, I lost my fake world.

But I found something that money, a family name, and people’s opinions could never give me.

I found love.

And I understood that sometimes the most beautiful person is standing in the last row, silent, ignored, and afraid…

Simply waiting for someone to finally see them.
