By order of the billionaire’s mother, all the maids in their mansion had to keep their faces covered and were never allowed to remove their scarves in front of her son. Marco never understood the reason for this strange rule until one day, when he pulled the scarf off one of the maids—and saw what his mother had been hiding from him all these years. 😳
Marco was thirty-five years old. By that age, he had already built a true business empire: he owned construction companies, several hotels, and real estate in different countries.
At work, hundreds of employees waited for his decisions. Sometimes, a single word from Marco was enough to close a multimillion-dollar deal.
But the moment he stepped through the door of his family home, everything changed.
In the enormous family mansion, his mother, Elizabeth, was still the one in charge.
After her husband’s death, she had taken complete control of the household. She hired the staff, planned the menus, decided who was allowed to visit, and sometimes even changed things around in her son’s room without warning.
Marco found it irritating, but he didn’t want to argue with his mother.
Elizabeth had raised him alone after his father died. She had always supported him through difficult years, and Marco had grown accustomed to respecting her decisions—even those he didn’t understand at all.
So he remained silent even when, one day, his mother unexpectedly dismissed almost the entire household staff.
A few days later, new cooks, gardeners, and maids appeared at the mansion.
However, there was one unusual rule concerning the women.
All the maids had to wear the same modest uniform and light-colored scarves that concealed almost their entire faces. Only their eyes could be seen.
“Mom, what’s the point of this?” Marco asked in surprise when he first saw the new staff.
“It’s necessary,” Elizabeth calmly replied.
“Necessary for whom?”
“For me.”
That was the end of the conversation.
At first, Marco assumed his mother had come up with yet another strange rule and would soon forget about it herself.
But weeks passed, and nothing changed.
The maids cleaned the rooms, brought breakfast, and served dinner, yet Marco never once saw any of their faces.
One day, he tried to speak to a young maid.
“Take off your scarf. It’s just the two of us here.”
The girl nervously shook her head.
“I’m sorry, sir. I’m not allowed to.”
“I’m the owner of this house.”
“Your mother said I would be fired immediately if I did.”
Marco didn’t insist.
But a few days later, he noticed that the girl had disappeared.
“Where’s Anna?” he asked his mother.
“She doesn’t work here anymore.”
Marco immediately understood what had happened.

Later, something similar happened twice more.
Whenever one of the women spoke to Marco about the strange rule or accidentally lowered her scarf slightly, she disappeared from the mansion the very next day.
Now the man had no doubt: his mother was hiding something from him.
One evening, Elizabeth left for a charity event. Marco stayed home and asked for dinner to be served in the large dining room.
A few minutes later, a young maid named Sofia entered.
She had only recently started working at the mansion and, like the other women, kept her face hidden beneath a scarf.
After placing a plate in front of Marco, Sofia began pouring him some water.
“Sofia.”
The girl stopped.
“Yes, sir?”
“Take off your scarf.”
Her hand began to tremble.
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“It’s your mother’s rule.”
“I know her rule perfectly well. I’m asking why all of you follow it.”
Sofia lowered her eyes.
“Please, sir, don’t ask me.”
“Is she threatening you?”
“No.”
“Then what are you afraid of?”
The girl remained silent.
Marco stood up from the table.
“For months, I’ve been trying to understand what’s happening in my own home. My mother fires anyone who shows me her face. Why?”
Sofia took a step backward.
“You should ask your mother.”
Those words only made the man angrier.
“Take off your scarf.”
“No, sir.”
Marco lost his patience. He walked over to the girl and, with a sharp movement, pulled the fabric away from her face.
And froze.
A large, old burn scar was visible on the right side of Sofia’s face. Her skin had been severely damaged from her temple almost all the way down to her chin.
The girl immediately covered her face with her hands.
“Are you satisfied?” she asked quietly.
Marco couldn’t answer.
For the first time, he realized that all this time he had been looking at her not as a person, but as a mystery he wanted to solve at any cost.
But the real shock was still ahead.
When Elizabeth returned home, she immediately learned what had happened.
And for the first time in many years, Marco saw his mother truly furious.
“You had no right to do that.”
“Then explain everything to me.”
Elizabeth remained silent for a long time.
Finally, she took her son to the staff quarters.
Several maids were there.
“Take off your scarves,” she asked.
The women hesitantly obeyed.
Marco froze.
One woman had a large birthmark covering half of her face. Another had deep scars from a car accident. A third had been born with a noticeable jaw deformity.
Now he understood why his mother had insisted on this strange rule for so many years.
Several years earlier, Elizabeth had begun helping women who struggled to find work because of differences in their appearance.
Many of them had been rejected for years, even though they had experience and were perfectly capable of doing their jobs.
Elizabeth deliberately hired them to work in her home, paid them well, and even provided housing for those who needed it.
She wanted to give them the opportunity to live with dignity and not depend on other people’s prejudices.
But over time, she had made a mistake herself.
“I was afraid that you would feel uncomfortable constantly seeing their injuries and scars,” Elizabeth admitted. “That’s why I created the rule about the scarves.”
Marco remained silent.
“I wanted to protect them from other people’s stares and, at the same time, protect you from something that might make you uncomfortable,” his mother continued. “But now I realize that instead, I made them hide themselves all over again. I suppose that was my mistake.”
Marco looked at Sofia.
He felt ashamed.
Not because of her face.
Because of what he had done.
He realized that his impatience and his desire to uncover the truth at any cost had made an innocent person feel humiliated.
The next morning, one rule in the mansion changed.
The scarves were no longer mandatory.
From then on, each woman could decide for herself whether she wanted to cover her face or not.
And for the first time, Marco truly understood that a person’s worth can never be determined by their appearance.
