My husband saw an unfamiliar plus-size woman by the pool and whispered, “Emma?”… But when she turned around and revealed a secret, I realized that my entire marriage had been built on lies and deception 😱💔
From the very first evening we arrived at the hotel, I felt that something was wrong.
Mark was quieter than usual. Every time his phone rang, he quickly looked at the screen and then placed it facedown on the table. Whenever I asked who it was, he smiled and said:
“Someone from work. It’s nothing important.”
But his smile did not look natural.
That night, I woke up around midnight and saw him standing on the balcony, staring down at the swimming pool below the hotel. He was holding his phone, but he was not speaking to anyone.
“Mark, why aren’t you sleeping?” I asked.
He turned around sharply, as though I had caught him doing something secret.
“It’s hot. I just came out here to get some air.”
Then he returned to bed, but he barely slept until morning.
I convinced myself that he was simply tired.
After all, I had always believed that my husband did not hide anything from me.
We had been married for six years. Mark often told me that I was the greatest achievement of his life. In front of his friends, he loved boasting that his wife was a former model and that men turned around to look at me in the street.
At first, I enjoyed it.
Then I began to notice that he did not love me.
He loved the feeling of having a beautiful woman beside him.
That summer, we had decided to spend a few days at an expensive seaside hotel. Mark said he needed to relax after several long months of work.
The first two days appeared peaceful.
But now, when I remember his silence, the way he hid his phone screen, and the long looks he directed toward the swimming pool, I understand that perhaps he had already sensed that his past was approaching him.
On the third day, we went down to the hotel’s outdoor swimming pool. I was wearing a new swimsuit that Mark had chosen for me himself. As we were leaving our room, he looked at me and smiled.
“Everyone is going to be looking at you.”
But once we reached the pool, he was no longer looking at me.
We were lying side by side on two inflatable pool loungers. I tried to talk to him, but he kept reaching into a large bag of potato chips and chewing.
“Mark, should we go to the restaurant tonight?” I asked.
“Yeah. We’ll think about it later.”
His eyes were half closed. Sweat from the sun glistened on his chest. He looked so indifferent that it felt as though I were not his wife, but a random stranger who happened to be lying beside him.
I turned my head away and decided not to say anything else.
At that exact moment, a woman walked past us.
She looked to be around forty years old. She was plus-size and wore an ordinary dark blue swimsuit. Her hair was tied up on top of her head. She was not looking at anyone. She was simply walking toward the other side of the pool.
Mark lifted a chip toward his mouth, but suddenly froze.
At first, I thought he was choking.
Then I saw his face.
He quickly sat up on the inflatable lounger, causing it to rock on the water. The bag of chips tilted, and several chips fell into the pool.
Mark did not even notice.
He stared after that woman in a way he had never looked at me.
Not with desire.
With fear.
With recognition.
“Emma?” he whispered.
The woman stopped.
Slowly, she turned around.
When their eyes met, I immediately understood that they knew each other.
Emma’s face went pale for a moment. Mark’s lips began to tremble. Neither of them spoke, but their silence seemed to contain years of history.
I sat upright and stared angrily at them.
“What is going on here?”
Mark turned sharply toward me.
“Laura, this isn’t what you think.”
I had not even had time to say what I was thinking.
Emma began walking toward us. Her steps were slow but confident. She stared at Mark as though she were trying to understand whether she was seeing a real person or a ghost.
“You’re alive?” Mark asked.
The continuation is in the comments 👇‼️
Emma smiled bitterly.
“As you can see.”
I looked at my husband.
“Why wouldn’t she be alive?”
Mark remained silent.
Emma shifted her gaze toward me.
“Are you his wife?”
“Yes.”
She studied my face for several seconds before asking:
“How long?”
“Six years.”
Emma closed her eyes. When she opened them again, there were tears in them.
“And he left me in a hospital eight years ago.”
Mark quickly climbed down into the water.
“Emma, this isn’t the time or place for this.”
“And when will it be the right time, Mark? After you disappear again?”
I felt my heart begin to pound.
“Who are you?” I asked.
Before answering, Emma looked at Mark.
“I’m his first wife.”
The world seemed to stop.
Mark had always told me that he had never been married. He said that when he was younger, he had loved a woman, but she had died in a car accident.
I whispered:
“You told me she was dead.”
Emma laughed bitterly.
“I only died in the stories he told.”
People around us had begun to stare, but I could not see them.
“We separated a long time ago,” Mark said. “It’s a complicated story.”
“No, it’s a very simple story,” Emma replied. “When I became ill and gained weight, he became ashamed of me. Then one day, he packed his belongings and left. He said he was going on a business trip. He never came back.”
I looked at Mark.
He did not deny it.
Emma continued:
“I waited for months. Then I discovered that he had started a new life in another city. But that isn’t everything.”
She turned toward the entrance to the swimming pool.
A girl of about eighteen was standing there. She was tall, with dark hair. She watched us with a frightened and confused expression.
When I looked closely at her face, my breath caught in my throat.
She had Mark’s eyes.
The same nose.
The same expression.
“This is our daughter, Sophie,” Emma said. “She was six years old when her father left. Mark did not even say goodbye to her.”
The girl approached us.
Mark took a step backward.
“Sophie…”
She raised her hand.
“Don’t say my name. You don’t have the right.”
I sat in the middle of the swimming pool, feeling as though my entire life had been built on a lie.
For six years, I had believed that this man was honest.
I had believed his stories.
I had believed that he did not have another family.
And now, the wife he had abandoned and his grown daughter were standing in front of me.
“Are you divorced?” I asked.
Mark did not answer.
Emma took a folded document from her bag.
“No. He never signed the papers.”
I felt my hands turn cold.
That meant our entire marriage might not even have been legal.
Mark tried to take my hand.
“Laura, please. I can explain everything.”
I pulled my hand away.
“Which part? The part where you declared your wife dead, or the part where you abandoned your child?”
He said nothing.
That day, I returned to our hotel room alone. I packed my belongings and left without waiting for Mark.
Later, I discovered that for years, he had been sending money to Emma—not out of sympathy, as he claimed, but to keep her silent and prevent her from searching for him.
But that was not the most painful part.
The most painful truth was that Mark had not abandoned Emma because of her appearance.
He had abandoned her on the day the doctors told him that her treatment would be expensive.
He had chosen to run away.
At that moment, I understood that if I ever became ill, grew old, or stopped being “perfect,” he would do exactly the same thing to me.
Sometimes, a single look is enough to destroy an entire marriage.
And that day by the swimming pool, I did not merely see my husband’s past.
I saw my possible future.
